Hum (Colmo in Italian) is billed as the world’s smallest town. A couple of dozen residents. Two streets. Twenty minutes to see the lot. But don’t let that fool you — it’s worth the detour.

Why Visit

The whole town is basically a single medieval alley with stone houses, a church, and a city gate decorated with ancient Glagolitic script. You can walk the entire thing in less time than it takes to drink a coffee.

My Tips

Try the biska. It’s a local mistletoe brandy made from a centuries-old recipe. The one shop in town sells it, along with honey and truffles.

Combine it with Kotli. They’re only about 6 km apart, though allow fifteen minutes on the narrow road. Visit both, swim in the river pools at Kotli, then eat. That’s a lovely half-day.

Skip the crowds. Hum gets tour buses in summer, but come early morning or late afternoon and you might have the whole town to yourself.

About 85 km from the house — an hour and a quarter. Best as a stop on a day exploring inland Istria.
