Kotli
Kotli is a small village where the Mirna River has carved natural swimming pools into the rock. The village grew up around watermills that used the river’s power — some of the mills are still there, preserved as they were.
Why I Love It
The combination of the old stone houses, the river rushing through, and the natural pools is unlike anything else in Istria. It feels like discovering a secret place, even though it’s not exactly unknown anymore.
Swimming
The pools are the main attraction. The water carves “cauldrons” (kotao in Croatian — hence the name) into the rock, creating natural swimming holes. The water is cool and clear. Just be aware that in late summer, the river runs lower and the pools get smaller.
My Tips
Bring a picnic. There’s a konoba but it’s not always open. Pack food and eat by the river.
Go to Hum after. It’s only 10 minutes away — the world’s smallest town. Perfect combo for a half-day trip.
Best in spring/early summer. The river is fullest then, and the pools are at their best.
About an hour from the house. Worth the drive.
