If you only visit one town during your stay, make it Rovinj. It’s about 45 minutes from the house, and I promise you’ll want to stay until sunset.

Why I Love It

Rovinj is what people imagine when they think of the Mediterranean — pastel-coloured houses stacked on a peninsula, fishing boats bobbing in the harbour, narrow streets that open onto unexpected sea views. It’s touristy, yes, but it earns every visitor.

My Tips

Go early or late. The day-trippers from cruise ships arrive around 10am and leave by 4pm. Come before or after and you’ll have the old town almost to yourself.

Climb to St. Euphemia. The church at the top of the hill has the best views in Istria. The climb is steep but short — maybe 10 minutes from the harbour.

Get gelato at Gelateria Italia. I’ve tried them all. This one wins. The pistachio is incredible.

Walk to Golden Cape. The forest park just south of town has swimming spots, shaded paths, and far fewer people than the town beaches.

Stay for sunset. Find a spot on the rocks near the church or grab a table at one of the harbour restaurants. The light turns everything gold.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and early autumn are perfect — warm enough to swim, quiet enough to explore. Summer evenings are magical but the daytime crowds can be intense.
