We don’t have much sand on the mainland — but there’s a little island just offshore that does, and getting there is half the fun. Levan is a small, low island off the Medulin coast with one genuinely sandy beach, shallow turquoise water, and a couple of easygoing beach bars. It’s the kind of place that makes children beg to go back.

Getting There

The easiest way is a taxi boat from the Medulin seafront — it’s a short hop across sheltered water. Boats run through the summer season; ask me and I’ll help you check the current timetable and where to catch one. You can also make your own way over by rented boat or kayak from Medulin — the water in the bay is shallow and gentle, good for beginners.

The Beach

Levan’s beach is soft and sandy — a real rarity on this rocky coast — with warm, shallow water that stays waist-deep a long way out. It’s the closest thing we have to the Caribbean, and I say that as someone who’s swum here all my life. There’s shade from low trees, space to spread out, and beach bars for cold drinks and something to eat at lunchtime, so you don’t have to pack the whole kitchen.

A Whole Slow Day

This isn’t a place you rush. You come over mid-morning, stake out a patch of sand, swim, snorkel over the seagrass, eat late, doze, and catch a boat back as the light softens. Bring sunscreen and a hat — the island is open and bright — and let the day go slow. That’s the whole point.

Good To Know

  • Seasonal: the boats and the bars run in summer; check current times before you set off.
  • Bring cash for the boat and the bar, just in case.
  • Sunbeds and umbrellas can be hired, but there aren’t many — come early or bring your own shade.
  • Pairs perfectly with a lazy week along the beaches of Ližnjan.
