Sea Star Festival — Umag

Sea Star is Istria’s best-known electronic music festival, held at the Stella Maris lagoon in Umag every late May. It’s run by the EXIT Festival team, brings in major international DJs, and pulls tens of thousands of people over four days. If you’re into electronic music, this is the Istrian highlight.

When It Happens

Late May, over four days — a Thursday welcome night, two main nights, and a Sunday close. Dates for the next edition are announced on the official site; check there before you book your week.

The Venue

Stella Maris is a natural lagoon with beaches and pine forest. The main stage sits inside the old ATP tennis stadium, with the Nautilus Arena tucked underneath it, and more stages spread across the site, each with its own crowd.

The setting does half the work — you’re dancing with the Adriatic behind you.

What to Expect

Lineup: Major electronic acts, announced through the winter and spring. Recent editions have brought Boris Brejcha and Xzibit; earlier years had The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Nina Kraviz and Amelie Lens.

Crowd: International, mostly 20s-30s, here for the music. Good vibes overall.

Schedule: Things start late afternoon and run until early morning. Peak hours are midnight onwards.

Extras: Beach parties, boat parties, pool parties during the day. It’s a full festival experience.

Yes, you’ll need to drive (or arrange transport — no drinking and driving). But after four days of festival, you’ll appreciate having a real home to come back to.

Drive time: About an hour and a quarter via the Istrian highway (the Ipsilon), roughly 90 km.

Pro tip: If you want to stay out very late, book a night or two in Umag for the peak nights, then retreat to the house for the recovery days.

Age limit: 18+. Minors with guardians must leave by midnight.

What to bring: Comfortable shoes, layers (nights cool down), cash for drinks, ear protection if you plan to be near speakers.

Beyond the Festival

Use the festival as an excuse to explore northern Istria:

• Before: Poreč (the Euphrasian Basilica’s Byzantine mosaics), Rovinj (the prettiest town on the coast), Grožnjan (the artists’ village)
